Ranking · 2001–2025

The most deforested countries

163 countries with forest, ranked by how much of it was cleared for good since 2001, by share, by all forest lost, and by where loss is speeding up.

Brazil has cleared the most forest for good since 2001, about 56.2 million ha. Deforestation here means forest turned into farms, mines and towns; forest lost to fire and logging, which usually grows back, is counted separately as forest lost.

Questions about deforestation by country

Which country has the most deforestation?

Brazil: about 56.2 million ha of forest cleared for good from 2001 to 2025, 11% of the forest it had in 2000. Indonesia (25 million ha) and Malaysia (7.55 million ha) come next.

Which country has lost the largest share of its forest?

Among countries with at least 10,000 hectares of forest in 2000, Cambodia has cleared the largest share for good: 32% of it since 2001.

Is deforestation increasing worldwide?

Forest loss has stayed about the same: about 26.3 million hectares a year in 2021–2025, against 26.8 million hectares a year in 2016–2020. That counts all forest lost, including to fire, which swings a lot from year to year.

What is the difference between deforestation and forest loss?

Forest loss (also called tree cover loss) is any loss of trees taller than 5 m, including to logging and fire, after which forest often grows back. Deforestation is only the forest cleared for good: turned into farms, pasture or plantations, mines, or towns and roads.
